A wandering museum

Coast Lines is a flexible moving museum in the open that becomes a meeting point for the reinterpretation of natural, social and historical heritage. It is a new cultural-touristic route supported by a digital infrastructure connecting museum institutions, local communities and visitors – the temporary inhabitants of our city and region.

Four starting points are planned (Opatija, Rijeka, Crikvenica and Rijeka Airport) where the state of all 15 locations – designed installations – will be able to be monitored via TV screens. People will be able to get information on transportation and tour guides, as well as reserve tickets for special programmes, either at those locations or using a smartphone app.

This is a trans-institutional programme jointly hosted by the Natural History Museum Rijeka, Rijeka City Museum, Croatian Museum of Tourism and the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral. The programme revolutionises the way heritage-oriented institutions cooperate. The expertise of four museum institutions put together guaranteed a sensible and relevant choice of sites. The synergy between museums, artists and tourist communities enriches the region’s cultural and touristic offer.

Coast Lines encourages accessibility, strengthens the bonds between local communities, whether urban, rural or maritime, celebrates tradition and reinvents the role the sea plays in our lives.

Impulse: The sea is crucial for the citizens of Rijeka and its surroundings. As the basis for the region’s climate, the sea has shaped life in this region in a unique way, impacting naval trade, military exploitation, industrial production, fishing and tourism. The story is so diverse and complex to fit into just one building. It includes coastal and highland areas, islands and coves, the urban port – all the places that make a region unique in its natural and cultural heritage. That is why we have chosen the “wandering museum” format, flexible and permanent, site-specific, and sustainable through the active participation of the inhabitants.
