The City of Rijeka presented its candidacy for the European Capital of Culture 2020 at the international conference of the Les Rencontres network, held in the French city of Lille. The conference was organised by the City of Lille, the 2004 European Capital of Culture, the region of Nord-Pas de Calais and the European cultural network Les Rencontres. The conference gathered the representatives of 16 European countries and of former and future European Capitals of Culture, as well as the representatives of candidate cities for the European Capital of Culture 2020, Limerick and Rijeka.

After the first two conferences were held in Paris (2012) and Tampere (2013), this is the third edition of the “European Campus of Local and Regional Authorities for Culture”. Representatives of authorities, directors of institutions, experts, representatives of the civil society and artists gathered in Lille for the four-day conference to discuss the regional dimensions of cultural policies, long-term effects of the Lille 2004 project, and international relations in culture.

The City of Rijeka, which was represented by Irena Kregar-Šegota, presented its vision of Rijeka as the European Capital of Culture 2020, as well as all the past and future activities within the Rijeka European Capital of Culture 2020 project.
