Lightening up the mood at Summer Art-kino in August is the Cult Comedies programme, which closes with a screening of the legendary black comedy classic The Big Lebowski (1998) by Joel and Ethan Coen on 16 August at 9 p.m.

The Big Lebowski tells the story of the laid-back The Dude Lebowski (Jeff Bridges), who is mistaken for a millionaire with the same last name. His carpet was ruined in an attempt to intimidate the wrong Lebowski, which gets The Dude into a series of problems as he enlists the help of his friends to replace the destroyed carpet.

Despite a poor box-office showing, the film was lauded by critics and is considered a cult classic today. In 2002, the movie’s fans organised the Lebowski Fest in Louisville (Kentucky), which has since expanded to other cities, while in 2005, a fan named Oliver Benjamin even founded a religion called Dudeism (The Church of the Latter-Day Dude).
