This one-of-a-kind festival is dedicated exclusively to history documentaries. The History Film Festival’s selection strives to break down the misconception that history and history documentaries are dull by highlighting films that reveal hidden historical details, use archive footage innovatively, are extensively researched and successfully initiate a dialogue on frequently polarising and ideologically divisive issues.

The fourth edition of the History Film Festival showcases 21 films in the official competition, in addition to a special programme dedicated to Federico Fellini on the 100th anniversary of his birth, and the Inclusive Cinema project – three films adapted for those with hearing and visual impairments. Little Chronicle – Zagreb School of Animated Film Classics is an exhibition and an eventful film programme for children and adults that pays homage to Vatroslav Mimica, a Croatian cinema great, and to seminal Croatian animated films, including the Academy Award-winning Ersatz by Dušan Vukotić and everyone’s favourite Professor Balthazar.

The special programme RI-Thinking History offers the premiere of the documentary Fiume Black-Red Rijeka, which reveals Rijeka’s unique and incredibly tumultuous history from the period of Habsburg rule through to 2020, when Rijeka is holding the title of European Capital of Culture. The disarming duo of film connoisseurs: Daniel Rafaelić and Dejan Dabić will discuss Tito on the big and small screen, with exclusive archive footage provided by Filmske Novosti, while the author Anita Panić will present her lavish monograph dedicated to Milena Dravić, one of the greatest actresses of the former Yugoslavia.
