Festival of the European Short Story in Rijeka!

The 17^th Festival of the European Short Story, with the theme of Heritage, will present globally renowned authors to audiences in Rijeka and Zagreb.

Some of them include Jan Carson, Carys Davies, Andrei Kurkov, Flavio Soriga, Suzana Tratnik, Tea Obreht, Ben Okri, Inga Žolude and others.

Through their stories and conversations, the authors will contemplate on all forms of heritage: familial, historical, ideological, national, gender and racial. In addition, by hosting acclaimed regional (Slovenia, Austria, Italy…) authors and professionals we can touch upon many topics regarding literature in the region, cultural contact and exchange.

As organised by the Croatian Writers Society, the audience in Rijeka will be able to enjoy short form masterpieces and taste the welcoming warmth of the Festival of the European Short Story on 31 May and 1 June. This year’s edition of FESS is part of the ECoC programme through the Kitchen flagship.

18:00, Caffe bar Tor (Podpinjol 43): Discussion, in collaboration with the Centre for Women’s studies of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka and the Centre for Advanced Studies – South Eastern Europe. Authors Tea Tulić and Željka Horvat Čeč will talk to moderator and literary theoretician Marija Ott Franolić about women’s writing and their position in literature. Have we moved beyond gender bias in literary language? Can it ever be overcome? The discussion is the results of a one-month project which gathered affirmed and unaffirmed female authors online to collaborate on a short story on their experience of Rijeka as a port – a place to encounter diversity.
