Flash mob at Rijeka Korzo

On Saturday, 14 September 2019, dancers from the K2K Dance Centre performed a flash mob at the Rijeka Korzo to promote the European Capital of Culture project.

The eye-catching dance routine, which was performed on three separate occasions as part of the European Capital of Culture promotional campaign, grabbed the attention of plenty of citizens who found themselves at the Rijeka Korzo, while the diligent ECoC volunteers were handing out brochures on the European Capital of Culture project, which also include a portion of the programme announced for 2020.

It should be noted that the flash mobs will also be performed in other cities around Croatia as part of the European Capital of Culture promotional campaign. Passers-by are welcome to join the dancers in the choreographed freeform dance in the street and show their support by emphasising how important dance, and culture in general, is for city life.

The dancers will perform a dance choreographed by Kristina Paunovski, the captain of the K2K dance team, with music by Sandi Bratonja, a multi-instrumentalist from Rijeka, and vocalist Boris Štok.

The K2K dance centre, whose attention-grabbing performance delighted the people of Rijeka, has won a plethora of awards at international and global competitions, and organised international workshops, festivals and shows. Kristina Paunovski explained that her concept of the choreography is based on the idea of the Port of Diversity as a guiding light, symbolically rendered through a series of choreographed visual motifs. By involving children, adolescents, men and women, the choreographer brought a fascinating dance performance to the streets „with a dose of children’s loveliness, youth trend, boyish defiance and female stability” – as she put it.

Sandi Bratonja, the composer of the soundtrack for the dancer’s performances, is a frequent collaborator with Damir Urban and a member of his backing band “4”. He also formed his own band and an art society, which share the name “Sinteza”, with the latter organising several club shows and music workshops for primary school pupils. He also scores theatre and films and the music he composed especially for this promotional performance features the vocals of musician Boris Štok. In the words of the composer himself, the entire harmony and idea was inspired by a song by the band Grad “Ima li nešto da nas pokrene” (“Is There Anything That Will Get Us Going?”). – I decided to answer their question in the form of this modern performance – said Bratonja. And the answer is action – that is, dance moves.
