After the Great War. A New Europe 1918 – 1923

20/10/2020 - 11/11/2020 // Square of the 111th Brigade of the Croatian Army

A touring exhibition showcasing more than 200 pieces of archive and multimedia material, such as photographs, maps and films about a changed Europe after World War I, will open on 20 October 2020 at the 111th Brigada Hrvatske Vojske Square in Rijeka.

The exhibition, which has been made possible by the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity, with participation by 40 historians from 18 countries, tells a unique story about the birth of a new order in Europe after 1918, with a special emphasis on the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. It will display numerous changes that occurred from 1918 to 1923 in different spheres of life and at various levels, ranging from politics and the economy to culture and everyday life. The exhibition highlights how these changes shaped the future of the continent, including current international relations and the contemporary culture of remembrance in various countries, while also taking into account the Croatian perspective. It has visited nine cities so far: Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Verdun (France), Berlin and Weimar (Germany), Prague (Czech Republic), Bratislava (Slovakia), Wrocław, Kraków and Warsaw (Poland).

The exhibition is arranged as a white and silver pavilion with an original design. It comprises over 200 pieces of archive material – photographs and copies of documents and films. The content will be displayed in the form of texts, moving images and interactive exhibits inside the pavilion and on its external walls. The exhibition also includes background sounds from that period. Historical documents and personal accounts tell the story of the growing pains of New Europe and a legacy that still affects its citizens, despite the fact that the Great War ended a century ago.
