From 23 to 25 May, Rijeka will mark the 50th anniversary of the revolutionary year 1968, considered to be the social and theoretical turning point in recent world history.
The anniversary will be marked by the event “’68 in Rijeka and the World”, organised jointly by the Department for Cultural Studies of the Rijeka University’s Faculty of Philosophy, the Drugo more association, the SKC Gallery and the IKS Students’ Association, as part of the project “Landscapes of Memory” of the Rijeka 2020 – European Capital of Culture programme line The Age of Power.
The event starts on Wednesday, 23 May at 7 pm with the opening of the exhibition “Revolt: ‘68 in Rijeka and the World” in the SKC Gallery that operates within the cult Palach Club. The exhibition combines the story of powerful political protests from May 1968 with recent student movements and art practices calling for a reflection on the present and its problems. It includes archival material (articles from the Novi list newspaper and records from student assemblies) that followed the events in Zagreb and Rijeka that year, short documentaries showing the current student resistance at universities around the world and a selection of student art works.
On the same day at 8 pm in OKC Palach a panel discussion will be held under the title “1968: What was happening in the world and what in Rijeka?”, with director Rajko Grlić, historian Hrvoje Klasić, journalist Neven Šantić and researcher Bruno Vignjević. The debate will be followed by the music programme “The Rhythm of Revolution by Radio Roža”.
On Thursday, 24 May, at 6.30 pm in OKC Palach there will be a screening of the documentary film “Plenumovie” by Rijeka authors Marta Batinić, Ana Jurčić and Sanja Kapidžić, produced by Filmaktiva. The documentary highlights the problem of educational policies in the broader sense, reflecting the blockade of teaching at the Faculty of Philosophy in Rijeka in 2009 and intertwining archive footage with reflections of the protagonists four years after the events.
After the screening, at 8 pm, a large forum titled “The Rijeka Resistance: the Blockade of 2009” will be held with the participation of Zorana Jančić, Bruno Nedoklan, Ivana Kljajić and Renato Stanković, along with a number of other participants of the blockade and others guests. The forum will be followed by the music programme “86 by Mile Hund”.
Finally, on Friday, 25 May, the Faculty of Philosophy (Hall F-006) will host the famous French sociologist and political thinker, Sylvain Lazarus, who will be holding a lecture titled “The Figure of the Worker and Politics in France: 1968-2018”. In his Rijeka lecture, Lazarus will address the state of French workers and factories in 1968, the legacy of ‘68 and the extent to which it is possible to draw conclusions about political experiences in that revolutionary year. The lecture will be moderated by Prof. Ozren Pupovac.
