We bring you photos from the site of what will be the Children’s House – a multifunctional venue for holding various shows, events and workshops with the aim of fostering creativity in children in an interactive way.
In the preparatory period for next year, when Rijeka will bear the prestigious title of the European Capital of Culture (ECoC), Rijeka’s first art quarter is being built at the location of the former Benčić industrial complex. It will play a pivotal part in the largest cultural project in Croatia’s history. Along with reconstruction works on the Sugar Refinery Palace, which is the future home of the Rijeka City Museum, with infrastructure construction, landscaping and the upcoming reconstruction of the “T-object”, the future home of the Rijeka City Library, reconstruction work is also being done on the so-called “Brick House object”, which will become home to the “Children’s House”.
The Children’s House was envisioned as a multifunctional location for holding various shows, events and workshops, the first of its kind in Croatia. It will become home to the children’s section of the Rijeka City Library, as well as to the numerous activities of the Rijeka City Puppet Theatre and the Art Cinema. These activities are intended for children up to the age of 12 with the aim of fostering creativity in children in an interactive way.
The following works have been carried out so far at the construction site of the “Children’s House”: the demolition of the roof, partition walls, floor structures, steel girders and columns, removing plaster from the inner side of facing walls. Heavy-duty scaffolding has been put up, indoor and outdoor earth-moving works and the foundations were done. A concrete ground slab was laid, waterproofed and reinforced. The ground slab of the lift was also laid and the basic supply and drainage systems were set in place.
The following works are currently in progress: concreting the ceiling panel above the ground-floor, which required a ground-floor structural steel frame propped up by columns and joists to be fitted. Work on the movie theatre auditorium and the concreting of the first-floor walls are also in full swing.
This HRK 160 million redevelopment project is part of the project entitled The revitalisation of the Benčić complex – The Brick House and The T-object. The City of Rijeka has received EU funding for this project in the form of a grant amounting to HRK 68.2 million. The completion of the works on the Children’s House is anticipated by mid-2020.
