A day before the opening of the European Capital of Culture in Rijeka, on Friday, January 31st 2020, Rijeka museums will host the 15th Night of Museums in a row. Initiated in 2005, Night of Museums grew to be the most significant event for Croatian museums.
This year it is participated by four Rijeka museums: Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka, Natural History Museum Rijeka, City Museum of Rijeka and Rijeka Astronomical Centre. Besides showcasing their major collections, the museums have prepared special programmes as Night of Museums attracts the larger numbers of museum visitors than any other day/event throughout the year.
City Museum of Rijeka
During Night of Museums, City Museum of Rijeka will organize a visit to the permanent exhibition First in the World – Rijeka Torpedo, located at a railroad warehouse, 4 Žabica Square. For this occasion, the exhibition is enriched by some new and restored exhibits. Visitors will have a one-time chance to see the original designs of the torpedo, delivered from Rijeka to Norway in 1875. Guided tours are available at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Elementary school kids can attend the educational workshop. Visitors will have a chance to buy various museum publications at discount prices and taste Torpedo tea, produced by Rijeka-based Samovar Bar.

Rijeka Astronomical Centre
Night of Museums in Rijeka Astronomical Centre is dedicated to space anniversaries. The programme, organized by Rijeka Sport, will take place in the digital planetarium from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. and will include various films and shows with educational and entertainment content. The Academic Astronomical Society of Rijeka will organize lectures in Great Hall from 6.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. From 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. all the visitors will have a chance to create drawings inspired by space anniversaries (launch pads), observe things under microscope, assemble jigsaw puzzles, see old telescopes and attend the presentation on sky-orientation. Providing good weather conditions, visitors will be able to observe the sky through the telescope at the Centre’s terrace. From midnight to 2 a.m. Centre’s Café Bar Galileo will host a party with a live gig by Throwback, along with plenty of 70ies, 80ies and 90ies music.

Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka
Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral, along with the dislocated Museum Collection of Kastav Region and Memorial Centre Lipa Remembers will mark Night of Museum by a rich programme related to a wide spectrum of museum activities. There will be lectures, presentations, children’s workshops, plays, music, film premiers, and guided tours. In Governor’s Palace, visitors will be able to have a look at permanent museum collections: Stones Collection, In the defence of Homeland, Through the Window of Governor’s Palace and Old Weapons, The Sails of Kvarner and Traces of Time, a along with exhibitions D’Annunzio’s Martyr, Violin Beyond Borders – Stradivari in Rijeka, Kresnik Collection, Cremona Collection and (In)Visible borders.

Natural History Museum Rijeka
During Night of Museums, Natural History Museum will showcase exhibition titled Fish Diversity in Adriatic Sea, along with the permanent museum collections that include seven thematic domains: Cave – in the darkness of karts underground, Geological history of the Adriatic, Geology of Rijeka region, Insects, amphibians and reptiles; Big Blue – diversity of life in submarine world of Kvarner, Aquarium – multimedia centre, Littoral botanical garden and Info Point roman Garden.
