The first Rijeka Film Forum will open on 28 August with the regional premiere of the documentary For Sama, and audiences in Rijeka will be able to enjoy twelve more premieres of feature and documentary films from around the world up to 2 September.

The first Rijeka Film Forum (RIFF), organised by Art-kino, will be held from 28 August to 2 September on the premises of Art-kino under the flagship programme Times of Power.

The rich six-day film programme of the Rijeka Film Forum opens with the regional premiere of the award-winning documentary For Sama by Syrian activist and journalist Waad Al-Kateab and British director Edward Watts. Recognised as the most nominated documentary film for the prestigious BAFTA awards, For Sama tells the story of the atrocities of war seen through a woman’s eyes, narrated in the intimate form of a mother’s love letter to her daughter Sama.

Its numerous film awards include the Golden Eye Award at the Cannes Film Festival for Best Documentary and BAFTA Awards in the categories of Best Documentary and Best Film Not in the English Language. For Sama also won the Main Award at the Aljazeera International Documentary Film Festival and the Audience Award at the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival and has been nominated for the prestigious Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2020.

The opening ceremony of the Rijeka Film Forum with a showing of For Sama will be held on 28 August at 9 p.m. in Summer Art-kino, in collaboration with the ZagrebDox International Documentary Film Festival.

In addition to the documentary film of the year For Sama, the Rijeka Film Forum programme offers twelve more feature and documentary films from all over the world, most of which will have their Croatian premiere at Art-kino. Guided by the principles of originality, dynamics, current relevance, and radicalism, the RIFF selection of films aims to create a strong foundation for discussion and examination, which is why the forum of the new Rijeka film event will be complemented by related conversations and encounters in and around the cinema.

With all the currently necessary epidemiological measures implemented, the new format of the Rijeka Film Festival, planned for March but postponed to now, expresses the organisers’ wish to offer a film format and content not previously available to audiences in Rijeka within the Times of Power flagship – inspired by and dedicated to questioning different forms of power and their interrelationships. This is why the RIFF programme is planned around the cinema, as a safe and familiar base for both the organisers and the visitors, a unique point where film and words can meet, which is part of the fundamental purpose of the film forum.

Unconcerned with competition and with numerous activities planned for the original spring event, the Rijeka Film Forum seeks to emphasise solidarity, openness and cooperation, as well as the most important question of all – what do films have to offer the viewer?
