Leading Team Named to Strengthen the Final Bid

rijeka2020As the City of Rijeka prepares for the final selection stage to become the European Capital of Culture 2020, a leading team has been named to develop a strategy and a program, to strengthen the quality of the Final Bid.

The team lead by Ivan Šarar, Head of the City Department of Culture includes Slaven Tolj, director of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, engaged as Artistic Director, Irena Kregar Šegota, Advisor for International Cooperation at the Rijeka City Department of Culture engaged as Executive Coordinator, Valerij Jurešić, director of Culture Department at the Primorje – Gorski Kotar County, engaged as Regional Coordinator, and Tanja Kalčić engaged as NGO Coordinator.

Invited by the City of Rijeka, Chris Torch also joins the team as Program Director and will be involved with development of a coherent vision and strategy for the cultural programme Rijeka2020. Chris Torch has become involved with the city of Rijeka already in 2005 through projects like SEAS and CORNERS, working closely with local organizations and artists. In 2013 and 2014, he was invited by the University of Rijeka as lecturer and consultant on establishing an international study program in cultural management. He is founder and Senior Associate at Intercult, a production and resource unit created in 1996 and based in Stockholm, Sweden.

Torch brings with him vast experience with European cultural policy, networks and EU funded projects. He has served recently on the Boards of European Museum Forum, Platform for Intercultural Europe and River//Cities and presently with Culture Action Europe.
He was a member of the artistic direction team for the Italian city Matera, European Capital of Culture 2019.

Development of Rijeka 2020 bid consists of developing a strategy for the cultural programme, involving local artists and cultural organizations in the conception, strengthening cultural infrastructure and promoting economic recovery through cultural tourism and support to creative industries.
