Open call for artworks for “Escape” exhibition

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Rijeka announces an Open Call for artworks for “Escape” exhibition, which is to be held as the third episode of the EU project “Risk Change”.

Escape covers the topic of migrations as a collective phenomenon in the arena of everyday life. Exploring causes, background and consequences of migrations, the exhibition lays an emphasis on escape as a model of searching for solutions, where slippages, elusion and detours are the usual paths of survival.

The notion of escape has numerous connotations: the escape of capital, the escape of thought, the escape of brains, the escape from reality, all of which involves crossing the regular boundaries and breaking the regulations.

While the need for escape often has a negative sign, this exhibition takes interest in it as a proactive and self-sustaining act that manifests at least in two ways – as an effect of the lack of tolerance for an ongoing situation but also as a perk of being able to make an escape in the first place. At the same time, the exhibition calls attention to the questionable sovereignty – if the control of escape is the postulate of every organized society, isn’t it true that freedom is limited, always and everywhere? Accordingly, isn’t it true that an act of escape in the systems of intensified control becomes more and more visible?

The exhibition explores migration field as the place of life-saving, risky and exhausting escapes, focusing on positive outcomes, but also on impossible endeavors. It evokes the works of art that take different approaches, from personalized and poetic all the way to documentary and critique-oriented, highlighting the potential of escape as an effect of coercion, but also as an effect of free choice. In this exhibition, we wonder how contemporary art correlates with the situations of escape and how, avoiding literal depiction, it communicates the perilous trajectories of various escapes.

The artworks will be selected by the jury of five members – the MMSU curators Ksenija Orelj, Sabina Salamon, Nataša Šuković, Marina Tkalčić and Sabrina Žigo (City Museum of Rijeka).
