Unity in Diversity is a concept that aims to bring differences together on a global scale. This is a concept that promotes tolerance in all aspects of society – the religious, linguistic, ethnic, cultural, social and political – while advocating the idea that diversity is something that enriches us, not something that divides us.
Since 2000, Unity in Diversity has also been the official slogan/motto of the European Union, and a global conference with the same name is taking place right now in Florence (Italy), in which Rijeka 2020 is also participating. The conference will feature presentations by renowned experts in culture, Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and activists whose work advocates the acceptance of diversity through different practices. Some of the key topics of the conference are the current migration problem and potential ways of solving it through intercultural dialogue between cities, cultural policies and the European Capital of Culture.
During the following three days, Ivan Šarar, the Head of the City Department of Culture, will present Rijeka’s candidacy for European Capital of Culture 2020 and participate in many useful lectures. As he told us himself: ?We’re here to present our work and to learn?.
