On 4 December in the so called Aquarium at the University of Rijeka Campus, a meeting was held between the management of the University of Trieste, headed by rector prof. Maurizio Fermeglio, and the management of the University of Rijeka and Rijeka 2020 – ECOC representatives, under the name “Science and Culture – Trieste and Rijeka 2020”.
The topic of this preliminary meeting was a potential collaboration between Rijeka – ECOC, the University of Rijeka, and Trieste, which will bear the title of European Capital of Science in 2020. This is a fantastic opportunity to connect the two cities and universities, as well as the two huge European projects.
University of Rijeka rector Snježana Prijić Samaržija and University of Trieste rector Maurizio Fermeglio made introductory speeches, and then Development and Strategic Partnerships Director Irena Kregar Šegota (Rijeka 2020), full professor Rajka Jurdana Šepić, PhD (Department of Physics of the University of Rijeka) and architect Ida Križaj Leko presented plans and projects of Rijeka 2020 – ECOC.
This opportunity is further made relevant by the fact that both cities have similar historical and industrial heritage and bear important titles in the same year, paving the way for mutual programme participation on relevant topics. They concluded that collaboration is possible in many way from programme co-productions to efforts regarding audience development in both cities.
A return visit which is going to include more concrete discussions regarding programming is taking place in January 2018.
