Twenty-seven communities gathered around the programme line 27 neighbourhoods, popularly known as “neighbours”, will this year take part in the celebration of European Neighbours’ Day, marked on the last Friday in May.
Through the action “Greetings from…”, on Friday, 25 May, neighbours will send more than 1000 picture postcards to different European addresses.
This is the first such event in which all neighbourhoods participate together by sending greetings to Europe from Kampus, Turnić-Mlaka, Škurinje, Drenova, Pehlin, Lovran, Opatija, Kostrena, Crikvenica, Novi Vinodolski, Matulji, Kastav, Jelenje, Čavle, Praputnjak, Delnice, Fužine, Mrkopalj, Gomirje, Kuti, Brod na Kupi, Rab, Krk, Malinska, Vrbnik, Cres and Unije.
The concept of “Greetings from…” refers to a now almost forgotten activity – the posting of picture postcards. A short thought, message or just a greeting with a photograph of the location is an expression of one’s regard to the neighbourhood it was sent from, but its purpose is also to draw attention to a specific topic or a neighbourhood problem. Therefore, the photographs chosen don’t just represent the usual beautiful tourist destinations, but also point to topics that for different reasons matter to the community in question.
Postcards will be sent to the addresses of various institutions and individuals who are already in some way acquainted with and/or involved in co-operation with the Rijeka 2020 – EPK project, such as the ECC cities of Matera, Leeuwarden or Wroclaw.
By sending a postcard, the neighbours join a great celebration of solidarity and understanding of European neighbourhoods’ different cultures, sending a message also from those neighbourhoods that have never had their postcards until now.
