The Tancaj 2020 Festival is the opening ceremony of a programme that introduces the Krk Neighbourhood and its surroundings. The programme is a kind of a medley of the rich cultural heritage of the area and it includes a parade that will help turn parts of the Old Town – including the hidden locations, streets, squares, parks and other sites – into places of encounters.

ABOUT THE FILM AS THE BACKBONE OF THE PARADE

The short film entitled Inkorničata studies a subject that finds itself outside its designated context. The protagonist, a personified work of art that also represents life on the island itself, tries to find its purpose by blending into the pictorial landscapes of the island of Krk while, by contemplating its own existence and self, it transmits emotion through movement. Seduced by tradition, it finds its language in all things contemporary.

The basic concept and choreography were developed by Andreja Brozović Adžić-Kapitanović, a dancer whose field of research involves experimental movement coupled with acting, which led her to personally take on the role of the protagonist of the story.

The music in this project is the work of composer Mak Murtić (Mimika Orchestra, Grand Union Orchestra, Croatian Radiotelevision Jazz Orchestra, Ad Libitum Septet etc.) who has been researching the cultural heritage of the island of Krk over the past few years and integrating this language into his contemporary compositions. In this context, the music follows i.e. creates the musical space wherein the protagonist moves and explores his/her overt and hidden qualities, thus emphasizing both the contemporary life and the historical context of the island. The music features a modern approach and contemporary Croatian musical creation, influenced by real and imaginary tradition.

Borut Brozović, a photographer who found himself in the role of the cameraman, uses framing techniques typical of photography, thus complementing the landscapes of the island, as well as the movement of the performer.

The creative trio was brought together by the town of Krk itself, where they have been spending their spare time for years. Their exploratory spirit, love of the town and the island of Krk, its culture and tradition, coupled with their need for artistic expression form the basis of this musical and scenic collaboration.

ABOUT THE IMPLEMENTING BODY

TheCreative Krk Association was founded in 2010 and its members are active in the area of the town of Krk. The association’s original aim was to encourage the young and old to develop their musical expression, i.e. to create new music and promote young bands from the town of Krk, but over time their interest spread to include other fields of culture. The association participates in organising and itself organises musical, entertainment, cultural, educational and other types of conventions, shows and manifestations. It aims to promote free, creative and cultural expression, while it also strives to promote the values of civil society in Krk, the Republic of Croatia and abroad in accordance with the country’s legal order.

ABOUT THE EUROPEAN NEIGHBOURHOOD

The Krk and Latvian Neighbourhoods were brought together through dance and dancing, both in its traditional folk forms and contemporary dance expression. Riga Folk Dancing Club was founded in 1989 and it regularly deals with organizing community-wide dance nights. The club takes part in a variety of festivals where they showcase their dancing acts, but also educate anyone interested. Their repertoire includes the 19th– and 20th-century national dances of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and other countries. These dance nights are often held with live band music and brilliant musicians playing a variety of instruments such as violins, accordions, mandolins and drums. In the summer, they usually organise summer dance camps. The club is run by Valdis Putniņš.
